The first in the series of Seminars under the Empowered Woman Series held on the 20th of October 2011, at the Fiesta Royale Hotel, Accra, was a resounding success. The Theme for the Seminar was, “Ghana’s Black Gold: Increasing Women’s Participation in the Oil and Gas Sector”.
Participants were drawn from among others, the Ministries of; Women and Children’s Affairs, Justice and Attorney General’s Department, Energy, Environment, Science and Technology, Youth and Sports; the UNDP; GNPC; the Ghana Chamber of Mines; the Ghana Chamber of Oil and Gas; the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA); National Petroleum Authority (NPA); Parliament; the Judiciary; Educational Institutions; Shell; KOSMOS Energy; Schlumberger Oil Services Goil; Civil Society Organisation and; the Media.
A Joint Communiqué was issued at the end of the Seminar. By this Communiqué, it was resolved among others that;
An Affirmative Action law, tailored towards enabling women’s participation at all levels of society including the oil and gas industry, be enacted and implemented. A Joint Communiqué was issued at the end of the Seminar by which it was resolved among others that; New laws needed to be made and existing ones implemented to ensure the protection of the rights of Persons with Disabilities.
